laser treatment for genital wartsGenital warts are so common that it is believed that more than 40 million men and women in the US alone live with the HPV – the human papilloma virus, which causes the outbreak of genital warts. Of course, the virus has many different strains and only a few of them are causing genital warts and a few others are contributing factor to more serious diseases like cervical cancer.

Fortunately, most of the people that carry the virus will never see any symptoms at all and in most cases the virus will be taken care of “naturally” by the immune system. When the warts appear though, they can cause a lot of troubles – they start as small bumps usually on the genital area, but then can spread to the vaginal walls, on the penis, in the anus and even on the thighs. At the time of this writing there is no cure for genital warts, but various treatments exist, and the laser treatment for genital warts is the one that we will discuss in detail.

However, let’s take a brief look at what other treatments are available; take note that some of them can be categorized as self-healing methods (after doctor’s consultation of course) and others will require a visit to the clinic or the doctor’s office. All treatments do is taking care of the visible signs of the HPV infection – the warts. The self-applied genital warts treatments are:

  1. Podofilox – it can be applied as a gel or solution by the patient
  2. Imiquimod – the cream is applied before going to bed every second day for up to 16 weeks
  3. The genital warts treatments that are carried out by a medical professional are:
  4. Cryotherapy (freezing the warts) with liquid nitrogen
  5. Podophyllin resin
  6. Bichloroacetic acid (BCA) or Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
  7. Surgical removal
  8. Laser treatment for genital warts (Laser surgery)

Laser treatment for genital warts is justified only in few cases, usually in patients that have large numbers of warts, patients that did not respond well to other treatments or patients that have intraurethral warts present. Depending on the number of the warts that have to be removed, the doctor will administer local, regional or general anesthetic and the warts will be removed with laser beams.

The advantages of this method are that the adjacent tissues are not damaged during the treatment and it works well in more than 50% of the patients.

The disadvantages of the laser treatment for genital warts are: the treatment is generally more expensive than the other treatments since it requires specialized equipment and trained specialist, certain side effects might appear after the surgery such as pain, itching, sore, scaring and others.

Many patients and medical practitioners argue that the success of the laser treatment for genital warts depends mainly on the skills of the doctor performing the surgery, which is why you should always turn to an experienced accredited specialist that has been recommended by your physician or has a proven experience.
